Bar Billiards

We introduced and named the game of Bar Billiards in 1933 when we teamed up with the famous billiard table manufacturer William Jelkes & Sons of Holloway Road, London to produce the original tables.

We now have a number of these original 1930's tables for sale which have been fully restored to their original condition after a colourful history over the last 70 years in the pubs, inns and taverns across the British Isles.

Bar Billiards rules

Can be played by 2, 3, or 4 players

  1. Place coin in slot and pull handle fully out to release balls.
  1. Place one white ball on spot nearest player, red ball on next spot, and black skittle on third spot and two white skittles on spots wide of 100 hole.

  2. Break is started by playing white ball from 'D' on to red with the object of potting either or both, WITHOUT knocking down a skittle.

All scores must be made after hitting another ball (except last ball stroke).

Red ball counts double throughout the game.

White balls count according to marked score.

If both balls are holed from break position, or if all balls are holed during game, break is continued from break position as at start of game.

At any time during a game, if a player shall hole both the red and white ball from break position 3 times consecutively into any holes, he shall at his fourth stroke from break position be barred from holing more than one ball.

Should he hole both balls a fourth time consecutively (in any holes) his break shall be erased.

If no balls are potted a break is finished.

Next player takes new ball from the ball rack.

Break continues until player ceases to score or makes a foul shot.

  3. FOUL SHOTS -- These erase entire score of break: --

    (a) Failing to hit a ball.

    (b) Any ball returning over baulk line or into 'D'.

    (c) Any ball mounting a cushion or falling off table.

    (d) Knocking down a white skittle.

    (e) Knocking down a black skittle.

NOTE -- (e) erases entire score made by player (and partner if any) from start of game. If, however, a white skittle is knocked down and a ball then knocks the black skittle down, only the white skittle penalty shall be paid.

  4. When no more balls are available in rack, play is continued by taking ball NEAREST TO PLAYER and playing it from the 'D'.
  5. After the bar has dropped the game shall be continued in the same manner as before the drop of the bar, with the exception of the last ball.
  6. The last ball must be played from the starting point, off one of the side cushions, direct into the 100 or 200 hole.

This shot shall count 100 or 200 if played with a white ball and 200 or 400 if with the red ball.

Each player has the right to play final shot until the ball is potted.

If on this shot the black skittle is knocked down the entire score is erased.

  7. The player having scores to his credit when the last ball is to be played into the centre hole will not lose his break score if he fails to hole the ball, nor if he miscues and ball goes out of 'D'.
  8. If no final shot into centre hole is to be played scores will count in the usual way.
  9. For final shot the two white skittles to be placed in the 50 holes. The black skittle to be left standing.
  10. If a skittle is knocked down by a ball and the ball prevents the skittle from being replaced on its spot the ball shall be returned to baulk and the skittle replaced before the next shot.
  11. If any skittle is knocked off its spot without falling, player does not lose his break but the skittle must be replaced on the spot before next shot is taken.
  12. If during a break a ball on the lip of the hole shall fall in without being touched, this shall be added to the break; should this occur at end of break and the score has been recorded, ball does not count.

If at the start of a break a ball on the lip of a hole shall fall in after the player has struck his cue ball this shall not count to the score of either player, and the break shall be continued with the next ball by the striker in play.

  13. If a ball comes to rest in the 'D' it should be removed and used as the next cue ball.
